Postpartum advice from Sarah Kahn Hair in Lower Queen Anne Seattle WA

We get a lot of questions about postpartum hairloss.. lets chat about it!

Around the three-month postpartum mark, you might be shocked to find your hair falling out rapidly and possibly even in large chunks. Don’t worry; there are some things you can do for postpartum hair loss.

Navigating postpartum hair loss can feel intimidating, and you might wonder, “What can I do? I feel like my hair won’t stop falling out!” Rest assured, plenty can be done to curb hair loss and encourage new, healthy growth.

What triggers postpartum hair loss?

Not everyone loses their hair after birth, but according to the American Pregnancy Association, about 40-50% of those who give birth will experience postpartum hair loss. Hairs lost can jump from about 80 hairs/day to over 400 each day during this time.

Postpartum hair loss happens due to a hormone shift around three months after birth, and while there isn’t much you can do to avoid that shift altogether, keep reading to learn other steps to mitigate your hair loss.

Our advice to help with hair loss during postpartum?

  1. Keep your hair as healthy as possible

  2. Use natural products to encourage hair regrowth and scalp health

  3. Get your hormones, vitamins, and minerals evaluated by your care provider

  4. Take approved and research-baked supplements as needed

  5. Eat a varied diet rich in nutrient-rich foods

We’ve outlined a few steps on what to do for postpartum hair loss, plus Sarah shares her expert take and more tips below:

  • Rule out underlying health concerns

  • Switch up your part regularly

  • Use claw clips and silk scrunchies

  • Remove dead ends to promote hair health

  • Avoid layers if the hair feels too thin

  • Opt for natural products that encourage growth

Products we stock at Sarah Kahn Hair and recommend to help with postpartum hair loss are:

  1. Reverie Cake Sarah says, “I love this formula for people experiencing hair thinning from postpartum and daily life.

Cake is formulated with clinically proven ingredients to protect, restore, hydrate, and soothe your hair. It’s powered by Swiss apple stem cells to create optimal conditions for hair growth and protect against hair fallout.”

  2. Leonor Greyl Tonique Vivifiant This spray works wonders for those experiencing hair loss and thinning. Plus, spraying it on your scalp is super easy when your hair is wet.

  3. Leonor Greyl Complexe Energisant Vials These are an intense hair regrowth product using 95% natural ingredients to energize the scalp and to help invigorate tissue and strengthen thinning, lifeless hair. These are applied on the scalp when the hair is wet for three months; then, you take a break.

Ultimately, if you struggle with postpartum hair loss, know that you are not alone, and it doesn’t last forever (and no, you won’t go bald). Reach out to us at sarah@sarahkahnhair.com to see if we can help you at all.

What Sarah Kahn Hair recommends you wear to your hair appointment

What you wear to your hair appointment makes a difference did you know? Let us break it down.

  1. No jewelry please this goes for both earrings and necklaces. We recommend our clients steer clear of wearing chunky jewelry as it often interferes with both cuts and colors.

2. Wear a t-shirt. During your haircut if there is a collar or bulkiness at your neck, then we cannot ensure an even haircut. Turtlenecks and sweaters are the biggest no no. These can also change the placement of color and make the hair lay differently than it normally would.

3. Wear something comfortable we want you to feel at home during your service.

We always have robes available for you to change into and for extra coverage we can put cape around you as well. Whatever makes you feel your best!

Just a few quick pro tips to help give you the best service possible :)

Top 3 grey coverage color questions we get at Sarah Kahn Hair

1. When should I start coloring my greys?
2. How often will I be in to touch it up?
3. Can I get grey highlights to blend my grey?

Answers:
1.
There is no rule, we love to see people rocking their grey hair!! Some people embrace some choose to color. We say if you are ready for the upkeep and have over 30% or more grey then come on in!
2. The maintenance of grey coverage depends on your % of grey. On average we see our grey clients every 3-7 weeks.
3. This is a big one…. No, there is no grey tube of color in the back, this is a huge misconception. To get grey hair you have to lift the hair to white and tone it with an ash (gives the appearance of silver). This is a color correction service and will always fade warm.

Some of our favorite at home products to keep greys looking refreshed is the Heart of Glass line from Davines. The light blue hue helps kick out brassy tones while hydrating and conditioning the hair.

For styling, we 100% would not live without the Davines Oi All In One Milk and Oi Oil combo on damp hair, if you have more texture it will help weight down the strand a little.

and we would recommend to finish with Ecalt Naturel. This balm is perfect to fighting frizz and adding softeneess to dry hair.
